I had a client the other day come to me and say that her birthday was just the other day. I got so excited and said Happy Birthday and she started crying and of course I asked her what’s wrong and she told me how she was sexually assaulted on her birthday. I looked at her and said it’s not a sad day to remember it’s a courageous battle that you fought and won and that she should celebrate each year that she survived. I asked her on each birthday to have an extra candle of her battle to remind her she made it out alive. I told her that most women do not make it out alive and that she should celebrate how amazing she is. Our scars are not meant to keep reminding us of our pains and struggles but to remind us of how far we have come and the struggles to get us where we are today. She left our session with her head held high and a smile on her face. Make today as amazing as you want it to be and act as if it’s already done...
